Bathed for diverse rivers, being Rio Pardo the main, the city has wide and forested streets. The activities of tourism and nature leisure, that offers a romantic scene to ride a bicycle, to ride a horse in a wild track, to explore beaches blank and to have  a river or sea bath.  

The main source of income of the city Canavieiras is the cacaueira farming,  where detaches : coconut,  piaçava, the wood, the cattle one, dendê, beyond its the enormous and inexhaustible tourist potential.  

The publication " Bíblia do Pescador" (Bible of the Fisherman) ", in its last edition, detaches Canavieiras as the biggest natural fishing boat of Robalo from Brazil, fact that must attract for the place, a significant parcel of sportists adepts of fishing, and  Blue Marlin in outsea fishing.   

The main tourist sites are:  Ponte Loyd (bridge), Fazenda Cubículo (farm-where in 1749 the first cacao tree from Bahia was planted, borning the called "civilization of the cacao "), the city hall, the municipal library, the Barra da Atalaia, Barra Albino, Barra Velha, Puxim de Dentro, Burundanga, Wharf of the Port, church ofSão Boaventura and church of Saint Antonio de Atalaia.  

The Coast of the Cacao

In the south coast from Bahia, Brazil it enters the cities of Ilhéus and Canavieiras, preserves true tropical ecological sanctuaries: lots of kilometers with beaches, some almost desert, with dense coconut palms in the varieties of the vegetation, since native Atlantic Forest the great areas of manguezal and gorgeous farms of cacao that, also, already had served of scene for movies and TV novels. The ways of road access always are between the best ones in the State. Ilhéus, the main polar receptive tourism of the region is 462 kilometers from Salvador, going straight on the BR-101. From Ilhéus, it is arrived Canavieiras, at 111 kilometers in the south route, through on BA-001, that are nothing less than one of the stretches from Linha Verde (Green String), the coast road that soon briefing will all bind the coast of the Bahia.   

By plane, you can arrive in Ilhéus through regular flights by Vasp or Nordeste Airlines, and for sea, diverses maritime cruises makes stopping in the city. 

The year of 1700 is considered the initial landmark for the population of the CANES city. The area that today corresponds to the city integrated the captainship of Is Jorge of the Ilhéus. Exactly when the donee JORGE FIGUEIREDO CORREIA, a noble Portuguese, shot up the process of settling of situated lands in the estuary of the  Patipe river, today Rio Pardo, these lands had still remained for much time depopulated of whites.  

With the development of the Captainship in the starts of century XVII, the creation of new population cores in areas still not explored was determined, with sight to the settling and the expulsion of the aboriginals who inhabited there on the other hand, proved it ambition about precious metal discovery, beyond the combat to the indians.   

It is inside of this context that the historians think to have been initiated the settling of the territory, where is sittuated the city of Canavieiras, at the end of century XVII and begin of century XVII. 

Beginning of the Town Canavieiras

One counts that a group of Brazilian and Portugueses adventurers running away from the indians and in land fetching better for its farmings arrived at a next small farm at the coast, known for POXIM (term that in the Tupi language means " ugly and bad thing "). There they had been fixed and later they constructed a chapel under the invocation of São Boaventura, whose picture is joined in the beach. Around the chapel it started, it formed the new population, of organized form.  

In 1718, the small town already had transformatted in " Freguesia de São Boaventura do Poxim " and to each day its development was more increasing, as much that in the reign of  D. João VI, for decree of 13th of December, the town passed the category of " Imperial Village of Canavieiras "  

With the end of the monarchy the village acquired the Forum of city, the 25th of May of 1881, first the ten years this date had after been of extreme development, arriving to be one of the most important cities of the South of the Bahia, what the alias of " Princess of the South " was valid it.  

The original core showed signs of growth, as intense as least continuous. Other cores had been appearing for the adjacencies, extending themselves until the neighborhoods of the Patipe River , and the Pardo river. Later he was evidenced that next to the estuary to the related river the place if presented in better conditions of survival. From there to have if dislocated for there many inhabitants of established cores already. This local one came to be the headquarters of the City.  

Origin of Name Canavieiras

One of the first families that dislocated from Poxim for the estuary of the Pardo River was the VIEIRA'S Family.   

End as many others had been dedicated to the sugar cane-of-sugar (cana-de-açúcar) culture. From there, according to tradition, the locality to be known for the CANAVIEIRAS name (sugar cane of the VIEIRAS, or in reason of the Canavieira culture).
